Design & Display:

The design of the Valve Index is similar to other VR in the market. On the front side, there is a glossy plastic faceplate above two front-facing cameras. There are 2 dials on both sides. With the left side dial, you can change the physical distance between lens and eyes. You can tighten or lose the headband with another dial.

Valve Index Display - Wider view, Adjusting Lense

The first dial is important as it changes the distance of lenses to your eyes. When you put lenses closer to your eyes, you get a wider field of view in this VR headset. This makes the Valve Index different from other VR headsets. If you have glasses, then you can not benefit from these settings. Because of glasses, it might not fit you and you will get a similar view like other VR headsets.

Valve Index has a dual 1440 x 1600 resolution (per eye) LCD display. It has a 120Hz refresh rate and you can also increase the refresh rate up to 144Hz.

You get Version 2.0 Base Stations, Index Controllers in the box. The sensors of this controller are accurate and impressive. The system never loses tracking while using this controller.

Performance:

The setup of the Valve Index is easy. It takes less than 10 minutes. You can use the VR headset with Nvidia GTX 980 GPU or higher. That’s a positive point for users with old GPU or hardware, they can use Valve Index easily with their system. For superior graphics, you should use a higher-level GPU.

The headset is dependent on the Steam VR platform. There are 36 games available on Steam VR which include Valve’s Moondust, Beat Saber, Space Pirate Trainer, Fruit Ninja, Arizona Sunshine. They are adding more game titles in the future.

All games look stunning in VR and give the real world feeling in game. Index controllers work great and hand moves feel natural. Audio performance is also top-notch. It has built-in speakers that give loud, distortionless sounds.

Overall, Valve Index is a high-end, best VR headset in the market. This premium VR headset has a superb display with a wider field of view, great sound experience, highest refresh rate, reliable tracking. The only con is it is expensive. On the other side, Oculus Quest comes at half the price of the Index VR headset. But if the price is not your problem then you can go for it. It is definitely a powerful VR headset for enthusiasts.
